Hello Everyone,
I want to say that we appreciate your patience and understanding right now with the new controlled vocabulary. There are a few things I'd like to clarify.
Tags
The tags/keywords that you have entered for your files are still there. Everything you've created, all the diligent work you've done is not lost. What you were seeing the last couple of days in the keywords column of the details page is a list of matches that our program came up with. They're not being displayed now and the files will be reprocessed once another update is completed.
All that work you might think you have to do
You don't have to. All your keywords are still there. Our program to find good matches in the controlled vocabulary will be worked on steady over the next few weeks. The matches you were presented will improve without you having to do anything.
Bad Matches
That being said, there are some severely horrible matches that we'll be working to extricate immediately. Over the next week or so, they will be corrected.
Matching Tool
Behind the scenes there is a small army of programmers that are just finishing up a new matching tool that will help speed up the process of converting tags on existing keywords. This will work behind the scenes. Again, there's nothing you really have to do at the moment. There may be some corrections you'll have to make soon, but they won't be nearly as bad as what you saw over the past two days, rest assured.
The Upload Process
When you upload an image, you will notice that the new tagging tool is still working and in place. This part of the upgrade will not change significantly as the issue that is so frustrating is only with matching existing tags – not new tags.
Sales and Traffic
I want to assure everyone that the traffic and sales today were the same as they were last Tuesday, perhaps slightly better. There is no downturn or slump because people couldn't find good images to download. In fact, we've heard from a lot of clients that they like the clarification that is offered. The disambiguation tool is still available while searching.
If there was one imperfection in iStockphoto that we heard from our most vocal critics, it's our search results. This is a massive and daunting task and there isn't going to be a completely pleasant way to deal with the issue of tags when there were no controls in place when the collection started in April 2000. We will do our best to make sure that the next time a conversion of tags happens that there will be fewer surprises and more appropriate matches. Until then, things will continue as they always have.
